Artist’s Statement Catherine Taggett
The artwork I create is often
based on images from my travels in the Northwest and beyond. I began working in watercolor when my
husband Ron and I started spending summers sailing in Desolation Sound in
British Columbia. I needed a
portable art medium. Watercolor
fit the bill. I enjoy the
spontaneity and the challenge. I
like the effects that can depict atmosphere, energy, light, and emotion.
Simple shapes without a lot of
extra detail, strong colors and powerful images are some of what I strive for.
I’m looking for the essential atmosphere or emotion in each piece, creating a
sense of the place, and a bit of mystery.
About 8 years ago, Ron and I
moved to a small farm in Blaine, WA., where we share our lives with animals, a
large garden, and a wonderful maritime community near the Canadian border.
I do landscapes primarily, but venture into figurative work,
pet portraits, and abstraction.
I enjoy experimenting and
expanding my work with various media. My more recent works involve acrylic and
collage on canvas. I also work in fiber, painting and dyeing silk and felting
wool.
Art is a continual
adventure. My goal and challenge
is to distill what I see and what I know and experience into the essential
elements of perception.
